Malling-Hansen Writing Ball was invented by Hans Rasmus Johann Malling-Hansen, principal of the Royal Institute for the deaf-mute in Copenhagen.  In 1882, it was delivered to the home of Friedrich Nietzsche.  Only 37 at the time, Nietzsche was losing his vision..  The writing ball, invented only a few years earlier, gave him a second chance at writing.
“The writing ball is a thing like me: made of ironYet easily twisted on journeys.Patience and tact are required in abundance,As well as fine fingers, to use us.”
That was Nietzsche’s tribute to this ingenious apparatus that allowed a trained person to type as many as 800 characters per minute, the equivalent of 160 words per minute..  Holy smokes!
The device had a subtle effect on his writing, making it more compact.. more forceful.  Nietzsche himself agreed with the fact, writing in a letter to a friend: “Our writing equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts.”
Adapted from the book “What the internet is doing to our brains” by Nicholas Carr.

"Develop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself."

Another wish of happy new year, this time from nypl:

Happy 4709 to all those celebrating the Chinese New Year! In honor of the Year of the Dragon, we present an image from the Library’s menu collection. In 1900 (which was actually the Year of the Rat) the Lotos Club welcomed Wu Ting-Fan, his Imperial Chinese Majesty’s Envoy to the United States, Spain and Peru, with a special menu featuring the dragon illustration above.
Considered one of the luckiest signs of the Chinese Zodiac, we hope this Year of the Dragon brings you joy and happiness!

When I was growing up in Russia, we followed the Chinese zodiac as well - everyone knew what year they were born in: horse, sheep, rat.. Dragon year is particularly important as this mystical creature symbolizes strength.  Chinese parents feel fortunate to have a son born in that year, as were my parents when my brother was born in 1976 - on Christmas day at that..
